​In LIS 588, I undertook the challenging task of creating an HTML tutorial, an endeavor that profoundly impacted my skill set and perspective as a librarian. This tutorial was designed to impart foundational knowledge of HTML to beginners, covering critical topics such as document structure, basic tags, text formatting, creating hyperlinks, and incorporating images. Through this project, I developed not only technical proficiency but also valuable skills in instructional design and visual communication.

Crafting the HTML tutorial pushed me out of my comfort zone as I delved into the intricacies of web development. This experience required a deep understanding of HTML syntax and structure, forcing me to create well-organized and clean code that could effectively convey information to learners. Additionally, I had to carefully consider the needs and knowledge level of the target audience, ensuring that the tutorial was designed to be both informative and accessible.

One of the most significant takeaways from this project was the realization that librarians should actively engage in creating digital resources like tutorials. In an increasingly digital world, libraries must adapt and remain relevant. As such, librarians have a critical role to play in creating and maintaining digital content that serves the evolving needs of their communities.

The CIA's World Factbook

In LIS 501, I had the opportunity to create a tutorial for the CIA World Factbook, a project that emphasized the crucial role of directing individuals to the most relevant resources. This project provided me with a unique perspective on resource discovery and demonstrated the importance of guiding users to the right information at the right time.
The tutorial I developed for the CIA World Factbook centered on effectively navigating and utilizing this valuable resource. It was designed to assist users in accessing comprehensive and up-to-date information on countries and regions. This project significantly enhanced my skills in resource evaluation and selection. I had to identify the key features and functions of the CIA World Factbook that could benefit researchers, policymakers, or anyone seeking accurate international data.
Creating this tutorial was a transformative experience that underscored the importance of understanding the diverse needs of library patrons. It required careful consideration of the target audience, their specific information requirements, and the optimal way to guide them to the relevant information. This project taught me the art of resource curation and the skill of ensuring that users could efficiently access the precise data they needed.

Starkville Public Library Marketing Plan

In LIS 559, I had the remarkable opportunity to create a comprehensive marketing plan for the Starkville Public Library, a project that not only enriched my understanding of library marketing but also had a lasting impact on the library itself. The class, which focused on Library Marketing and Public Relations, provided me with the perfect platform to apply my coursework directly to my workplace, seeking to enhance the Starkville Public Library's outreach and engagement.
Creating this marketing plan represented a transformative experience, as it allowed me to gain firsthand experience in developing a strategic roadmap for promoting a library's services, events, and resources. I learned to identify the library's unique strengths and challenges and tailor marketing strategies to better serve its community. From understanding the demographics of the library's patrons to crafting compelling promotional materials, this project was a valuable exercise in strategic thinking and practical implementation.
What made this project particularly significant was its real-world impact. The Starkville Public Library was able to benefit directly from the marketing plan I crafted during the course. It was immensely gratifying to see how this plan contributed to shaping the library's marketing efforts and outreach strategies. This experience underscored the practical relevance of library science education and the crucial role librarians play in advocating for and enhancing the community's access to information and services. It also reaffirmed the idea that librarians can make a tangible difference in their communities by applying their knowledge and skills to create meaningful and effective marketing plans for their libraries.

Weeding Project for the Starkville Public Library

In LIS 511, I undertook a transformative project that not only enriched my understanding of library science but also had a significant real-life impact on the Starkville Public Library, where I was employed at the time. This project focused on the weeding of the library's long-neglected bibliography section, which had not seen a comprehensive weeding effort in over two decades.
The weeding project was a hands-on experience that provided me with practical insights into collection development and management. It required a meticulous assessment of the bibliography section, identifying outdated or redundant materials, and ensuring that the collection remained current and relevant. Through this process, I honed my ability to critically evaluate the quality and usefulness of library resources.
What made this project particularly special was its immediate and tangible impact on the library. By weeding the bibliography section, we not only decluttered the shelves but also made space for new and more relevant materials. This effort greatly enhanced the library's ability to provide patrons with up-to-date and useful resources. It showcased the value of actively managing library collections, ensuring that they evolve to meet the changing needs of the community. This project underscored the vital role that librarians play in maintaining and enhancing the quality of library collections, ultimately improving the library's ability to serve its patrons effectively.

Event and Budget Planning

In LIS 640, I had the valuable opportunity to create a budget planning document for a hypothetical project at the Mississippi State University Library. While this project didn't have immediate real-world implications, it served as a crucial learning experience that has since proved to be highly beneficial in my role as a Supervisory Librarian at the Columbus Air Force Base.
The task of developing a budget and event planning document for a hypothetical project was a pivotal exercise in financial and project management. It allowed me to gain a deep understanding of how to allocate resources, plan for expenses, and justify budget requests. Even though the project was not implemented, the skills I acquired during this exercise became invaluable as I began advocating for budgets and justifying expenditures in my current role.
This hypothetical project offered me the opportunity to explore the complexities of planning events that require a significant budget, including making financial projections, identifying cost categories, and understanding the intricacies of budget management. These skills have proven to be extremely beneficial in my day-to-day responsibilities as a Supervisory Librarian, where I routinely have to advocate for and manage budgets to successfully execute events and initiatives that enhance the library's services and support the needs of the Columbus Air Force Base community. This experience underscored the practical relevance of my library science education, as it equipped me with the expertise to effectively allocate resources and make a compelling case for budget allocations.
