Brandi Lomax is the Adult Services Librarian and Circulation Clerk at Starkville Public Library in Starkville, MS.  Brandi earned her Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2023. Before that, she got her Bachelor’s in English with a minor in Linguistics from Mississippi State University in 2015. A programming librarian at heart, she excels at crafting engaging library events. Her marketing skills add a professional touch to our library's outreach.

Starkville Public Library
October 2021 - Current

Circulation Librarian 
I have been working as the Circulation Librarian at Starkville Public Library since October 2021. In this role, I facilitate the circulation of library materials using the library's computerized system, including check-in and check-out processes. I assist patrons in using the library's electronic and print resources and manage patron accounts. I am responsible for receiving and shelving incoming materials, preparing outgoing materials, and collecting and recording fines and fees for services. I ensure that adequate supplies of office materials are available and collect statistical data to support library operations. I maintain a welcoming physical atmosphere, prioritizing the safety of both patrons and staff. Additionally, I perform necessary maintenance or housekeeping tasks, demonstrate a clear understanding of library policies, and exercise judgment in non-routine situations. I also assist with or perform library programs when assigned, contributing to the library's outreach and community engagement efforts.

Adult Programming Librarian 
June 2022
Since June 2022, I have unofficially taken on the role of Adult Programming Librarian at Starkville Public Library. In this capacity, I develop, design, and implement innovative adult programming for individuals of all ages, engaging the community in lifelong learning. I design and implement adult summer reading programs, while also providing outreach adult programs tailored to community needs and library objectives. Additionally, I forge partnerships with key organizations and facilities to serve adults and families, working closely to promote programs and services. I contribute to collection development strategies related to adult programming, maintaining positive relationships with leadership, the public, and co-workers through effective and courteous communication. Furthermore, I ensure accurate statistical data collection in accordance with established library procedures.

Columbus Air Force Base Library
Library Supervisor
July 2023-December 2023

​During my tenure as the Supervisory Librarian at Columbus Air Force Base Library from July 2023 to December 2023, I directed and oversaw all library functions, including administration, management, technical, and public services. I successfully implemented a new Integrated Library System (ILS), demonstrating my ability to manage complex projects and adapt to technological advancements. I played a pivotal role in planning, managing, and administering a comprehensive library program, overseeing library administration, personnel management, circulation services, reference/research services, technical services, and technological development and support. My responsibilities included managing library facilities, maintenance, improvements, procurement of furniture and equipment, and space allocation. I established and maintained policies and procedures, crafted detailed manuals for automated library operations, and continually researched and enhanced library functions. By actively participating in professional meetings, conferences, workshops, and seminars, I stayed updated with the latest developments in the library profession. I meticulously developed, prepared, and justified library budgets, ensuring alignment with short- and long-term library plans, diligently monitored fund allocations, met expenditure targets, and justified any unfunded requirements.

Assistant Store Leader

During my tenure as the Assistant Store Leader at GameStop from December 2018 to February 2022, I provided friendly and enthusiastic service to guests, assisting them with product selection, purchases, returns, and questions. I directed and oversaw retail store operations, including training store associates. In addition to these responsibilities, I initiated and successfully organized a toy drive for the Starkville Public Library, raising over $1500 to support the community. This experience enhanced my leadership and organizational skills while reinforcing my commitment to community engagement and service.

​During my tenure as an Independent Agent at Aflac from May 2018 to May 2019, I excelled in conducting group presentations and cold calls to effectively promote Aflac's insurance policies. Utilizing my strong communication skills and in-depth knowledge of Aflac's offerings, I conducted informative group presentations to educate potential clients about the benefits of our policies. Additionally, I successfully engaged in cold calling activities to reach out to prospective clients, showcasing Aflac's solutions and addressing their insurance needs. Through these efforts, I played a pivotal role in assisting individuals with their insurance requirements and ensuring they received personalized coverage tailored to their needs.

August 2015 to December 2018
My experience as a Copywriter at Momentum Consulting from August 2015 to April 2018 significantly shaped my approach to subsequent roles, influencing how I engage with tasks and projects. During this time, I honed my skills in researching, writing, editing, and proofreading various types of copy, allowing me to effectively communicate messages across different platforms. I learned to tailor my writing to match the goals, audience, and message of each campaign, ensuring maximum impact and engagement. Additionally, I gained valuable experience in creating social media campaigns for multiple clients, mastering the art of crafting compelling content to capture attention in the digital realm. Writing an average of 4 articles per month for each client and sending an average of 1.5 marketing emails per client per month further refined my ability to produce high-quality content efficiently and consistently. Importantly, the skills I developed as a Copywriter continue to be integral to my current role, where I am responsible for creating marketing materials that effectively communicate the value of our services to our target audience.
